1st Crymych Guides

Annual Report from 2007

Several brownies came up to join our Guide group in September.  Numbers and attendance was good because the girls were all looking forward to attending the BigGig at Wembley in October.  This was a huge undertaking for some of the girls as many of them had never been to London before.  We left Crymych at 8a.m. and met up with Broad Haven guides in St. Clears.  We travelled down the motorway, through the city of London to London Zoo, where we spent a wonderful afternoon watching the penguins, squirrel monkeys, camels, butterflies, etc.   We had a picnic lunch in the zoo.  Then we drove off to Wembley Arena where we went to the Wimpy Bar for a chip supper before going into the Big Gig.  The girls know I don’t particularly like this sort of thing – too many people and screaming for my liking – must be getting old – but we all had fun.  Jade sat there listening to her own kind of music on her MP3 player.  It was just a shame that all those girls weren’t wearing uniform and no mention was made to guiding during the performance.  The journey home was uneventful until we were within 300yds of the picking up point for the parents where a tragic accident had taken place earlier in the evening.  The police closed the road and a 5 mile detour had to be made but the girls were excellent even though some of them and their parents were quizzed by the police.

Various Go-For-Its were undertaken throughout the year including Construction, where we joined with guides from Narberth at Cardigan College for a great morning of brick laying, tiling and woodwork.  This was all organised by Bodil Humphries from Narberth Guides and our grateful thanks go to her for letting us join in.

Remembrance Sunday we took part in the service and parade in Crymych.
Christmas we did many crafts and attended a Carol Service where we all took part in a fantastic, fun service in St. Dogmaels church with lots of other guiding and scouting members.

Three girls started working towards their Baden Powell Award and as part of this we all visited Nant yr Arian Red Kite Centre near Aberystwyth.  The weather was horrid but that didn’t stop us walking round the lake waiting for the Kites to come in for the food which was put out for them.  We counted 19 birds but not one of them seemed to be hungry that day.  We were and after having hot chocolate in the Centre café we went for a drive around Aberystwyth, watched the surfers riding the waves by the harbour there then drove down to Aberaeron for a chip supper before returning home.

In June we all decided that we would do the Mr. Men challenge for Children with Leukaemia.  The girls wanted to swim 26 lengths in Crymych pool but wanted to meet there at 7.15a.m. to do it.  They finished the challenge within an hour and raised a good amount of money for unit funds and Children with Leukaemia.  Following the swim they all returned to Tegryn to build a survival shelter, prepare and cook on an open fire their own lunches.  Then they returned to Crymych for Dragon Sports in the pool before having tea.  In the evening they travelled on the Green Dragon Bus to Strumble Head buying chips in Goodwick on the way, to watch the sea birds and porpoises, have a good look at the lighthouse before  going home tired and weary but very satisfied and pleased with themselves.

At the end of June several of the guides travelled up to Broneirion for a weekend of Guides with their Guiders.  They made many new friends and for most of them it was their first experience of staying in the house.  They learnt many new things, had a go at rafting on the river and I can safely say that I have never heard one girl scream for so loud and long… Well I suppose the water was extremely cold!!

We all attended a wonderful barbeque with lots of other guides, brownies and rainbows from North Pembrokeshire Division in Yr Hen Ysgol, Dinas Cross.  We thank Max and Su, Ellen and the other mums that came to cook for the food whilst we all played outside.

In July 10 girls from the unit attended the Royal Welsh Show to help with duties for the week.  They felt it was hard work but they did enjoy it very much, they would have preferred having smaller rooms with fewer people in them but loved the food and the animals.

In August 2 guides attended the Pembrokeshire County Show in Haverfordwest to help out with the dog rings.  They too enjoyed themselves and showed that Guides do exist in the County.

We also held a barbeque to celebrate our Assistant Guider Bev gaining her Queens Guide Award.  She has been working so hard to complete this award and was delighted to be presented with her badge from Ruth Best, County Commissioner.  Thanks must go to Max and Su for attending the barbeque and to all the other guests from around the County who came to help us celebrate.  We await her call to the Palace to be presented with her ‘dress brooch’.

Now with the new term upon us already, where did the summer go, we are busy planning our Christmas Craft weekend, a party for Halloween, various outings, etc.  We are sorry that Llinos has left us to concentrate more on her Brownies and Rainbows but welcome young leaders Jade and Nia and Mum Su to the fold.
